Tata Motors has once again made headlines in the Indian auto industry. In August 2025, the company sold 73,178 units, marking a steady 2% rise compared to the same month last year. While the overall numbers show balanced growth, the real highlight of the month was Tata’s record-breaking electric vehicle (EV) sales.
Passenger Vehicles: A Mixed Bag
Tata’s passenger vehicle (PV) segment sold 43,315 units in August, reflecting a 3% dip compared to last year. Domestic sales slipped by 7% to 41,001 units, but exports turned out to be a bright spot. Tata shipped 2,314 PV units overseas, a massive 573% jump from August 2024, showing strong global demand for its cars.
Commercial Vehicles Driving Growth
On the commercial vehicle (CV) side, Tata Motors performed strongly. Domestic CV sales climbed to 27,481 units, while exports surged by 77% to 2,382 units. Heavy trucks, light and medium commercial vehicles, passenger carriers, and small CVs all registered healthy growth, proving that Tata’s CV business continues to be its backbone in terms of steady volumes.
EV Sales at an All-Time High
The biggest headline, however, came from Tata’s EV portfolio. The company sold 8,540 electric vehicles in August 2025, its highest monthly EV sales ever. This marks a staggering 44% increase compared to August 2024, when it sold 5,935 EVs. With models like the Nexon EV, Punch EV, and Tiago EV gaining popularity, Tata has firmly established itself as India’s EV leader.
Why This Matters
Tata’s performance in August shows how the company is striking a balance between its traditional strengths and future ambitions. While passenger vehicle numbers faced a dip, booming exports and CV growth kept the momentum positive. Most importantly, its record-breaking EV sales highlight India’s fast-growing shift toward green mobility.
The Road Ahead
As the festive season approaches, Tata Motors is well-positioned to ride the wave of consumer demand. With a strong EV lineup, growing exports, and reliable CV performance, Tata looks set to maintain its leadership position and drive India’s auto industry toward a sustainable future.
