Mahindra XUV700 5-seater variants feared discontinued, removed from website

Mahindra has discreetly taken off the 5-seater models of the XUV700 from the website. This may mean that the Chakan-based manufacturer has dropped the five-seater versions of the mid-size SUV. This may be due to low orders for the 5-seat version of XUV700.

Though Mahindra hasn’t provided sales figures of 5-seater models of XUV700, market insights indicate that individuals predominantly prefer three-row variants. In addition, Mahindra boasts a lineup with SUV dominance. Thus, for consumers searching for a 5-seat SUV, Mahindra has a sufficient number of alternatives.

This has also seen the base price going up to Rs. 14.49 lakh from Rs. 13.99 lakh (both ex-showroom). Mahindra retails the XUV700 in five broad trims viz MX, AX5 S, AX5, AX7, and AX7L. The 5-seater versions of XUV700 were available only in the MX and AX5 trims. Post the latest update, Mahindra XUV700 prices begin from Rs 14.49 lakh and reach Rs. 25.15 lakh (both ex-showroom), both for the all-wheel drive Ebony variant.

Up to now, the 7-seat models of XUV700 come in all variants while the 6-seater versions are offered in AX7, AX7 L, and Ebony Edition.

Mahindra XUV700: Powertrain specs

Mahindra XUV700 is available with a choice of two engines: 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol motor and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel. The latter chugs out 200 bhp and 380 Nm of maximum torque. The other two are tuned differently. The lowest variant in the range called MX comes equipped with a diesel mill with output tuned down to 153 bhp and 360 Nm of torque.

The top-end trims are equipped with a more diesel-powered engine delivering 183 bhp and a peak torque of 450 Nm. Both petrol and diesel engines are available with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The top-end diesel trim is also available with an all-wheel drive option.

The Mahindra XUV700, a leading Indian SUV, has apparently discontinued its 5-seater versions from its offerings. As of May 2025, the versions do not find any mention on Mahindra’s website, suggesting that they might have been phased out unofficially.

What Has Changed?

  • 5-seater versions (MX and AX3) are no longer present in the official configurator.
  • Before, they were the most budget-friendly alternatives for customers who did not require a third row.
  • Nowadays, only 7-seater versions in AX3, AX5, AX7, and AX7 L trims appear.

Reasons for Discontinuation (Market Demand Shift)

  • Indian consumers increasingly want 7-seater SUVs for family purposes.
  • Increased demand witnessed for three-row models, with greater practicality.

Production Optimization

  • Mahindra might be optimizing production to concentrate on high-turning trims.
  • Reducing complexity by simplifying the lineup can make manufacturing easier.
  • Low Sales Volume
  • 5-seater models, particularly in MX trim, perhaps did not experience steady demand.
  • Most city customers prefer compact SUVs at this price point instead.

Focus on Higher Margins

  • 7-seater versions, particularly the AX5 and AX7, are more profitable.
  • They are more feature-laden and well-received by high-end buyers.

Mahindra appears to have gone unnoticed in stopping the 5-seater versions of its best-selling SUV, the XUV700, leaving potential customers worried. Recent sighting by car enthusiasts and media reports show that these particular versions have been taken off the company’s official website, raising suspicions that they are no longer on offer for booking.

Until now, the XUV700 range had both 5-seater and 7-seater versions, with the 5-seater variants being mostly in the MX and AX3 variants. These were in demand among customers who desired a less expensive variant of the car without a third-row requirement. But with increasing demand for roomy 7-seaters in India, Mahindra seems to be simplifying its range.

Interestingly, this follows the recent cancellation of the 6-seater (captain seat) models, which were offered in the upper AX7 and AX7 L trims. Those models, with two separate captain seats in the middle row, did not catch on because of practicality concerns—like non-sliding seats, no ventilation, and cramped space between the seats, making third-row access cumbersome.

Now, with the 5-seater versions also absent, it indicates Mahindra might be targeting its 7-seater range more aggressively. The AX3, AX5, AX7, and AX7 L variants are listed on the website at present, all of them having three-row configurations. This might be a reaction to customer demand in the premium SUV segment, where families generally prefer the flexibility provided by an additional row.

So far, Mahindra has not officially announced the permanent discontinuation of the 5-seater XUV700. Perhaps the variants have only been temporarily discontinued or are being refreshed. Still, their deletion from the site heavily suggests a change in the brand’s direction.

For those specifically seeking a 5-seater Mahindra SUV, options such as the Scorpio-N Z2 and Z4 variants or the Thar (if off-road performance is an issue) could be considered. Meanwhile, those seeking the XUV700 will now have to do with the bigger 7-seater versions, which are still on offer with both petrol and diesel engines, as well as manual and automatic transmissions.

If you’re looking at the XUV700, it’s worth inquiring with local dealerships for current stock and potential leftover 5-seater models.
